OhOK – Performance

Whitney Casal | Britt Davis

A performance showcasing three premieres, two women, and one new dance company

This evening of premieres is presented by OhOK Performance Group,  founded by Britt Davis & Whitney Casal. Newly established in Berlin,  these women set out to create dynamic, collaborative, interdisciplinary dance performance works for the stage and beyond. Join us for three new  pieces, two solos and one duet, choreographed and performed by Britt  and Whitney:

DO MIRRORS BURN?
Performed by Whitney Casal and Britt Davis
Music composed by David Guy

Adapted version (video installation)
The film version of “Do mirrors burn?” was created as part of SOUNDANCE  Festival Berlin 2020, while adapting to physical distancing requirements due to Covid-19. Here, overlaid images create the illusion of what was once a duet, reimagined into two individual solos. The result is a ghosting of physical touch and movement partnering which once existed, but no longer does. The drum score by David Guy adds a layer of parallel experiences which yearn to intersect, and highlights what it means to work together while apart.

Doors open 30 minutes prior to showtime, where audience members are invited to view the video as an installation in the space. Viewers can observe the shifts this work undertook through the lens of the camera, as well as the inherent duality within the piece which is magnified through its two separate forms. How does an experience alter through different mediums? What nuances drastically shift or carry through these two modes of viewing?

Live performance (premiere)
“Do mirrors burn?” is a trio featuring two movement artists and one  musician. The two female movement artists find themselves in a  reflection of their lives and long-time friendship as well as their  personal, current state of being. “Do mirrors burn?” was created from a  source of physical movement tasks.. From the beginning, their friendship  and lived experiences served as the undercurrent for their concept.  Britt and Whitney explored what it would mean to allow physicality to  take priority in the creative process, and in turn discovered the  imprinted dramaturgy of an inherent reflection of duality; Discovering  two sides of the same and finding self in the other. What does it mean  to create – and even more, to co-exist – with someone who knows you so  well, they could be your mirror image?

ACT NATURAL
Performed by Britt Davis

I present you with a quarter-life synopsis, which is as clear as an  oxymoron – opposite ends of the linguistic spectrum joining together in a  nonsensical, sense-making statement. It’s a serious boss-lady infused  with comic-relief. It’s liberation with a side of leftover fear. It’s  over-dramatic, yet in its own right. It’s flirtatious blended with  brutal sarcasm. It’s sexy mixed with the comedic greatness of Lucille  Ball. It’s a statement of a 20-something female-identifying  international person of the 2020’s trying to find some frickin’ balance.

Act natural is a performance comprising three parts, performed individually or as one piece.
1. awfully pretty
2. absolutely unsure
3. alone in a crowd

Music:
1. Só Danço Samba by Stan Getz, Joao Gilberto, Antonio Carlos, Vinicius de Moraes
2. Verdi: La traviata- Act 1 “Libiamo, ne’lieti calici” by Giuseppe Verdi, Carlo Rizzi, London Symphony Orchestra
3. Excerpts of Ne me quitte pas (acapella) by Marie Kruttli

NOW AND NOT YET
Performed by Whitney Casal

It was a constant rearranging:
Of her thoughts,
Her expectations,
Her furniture…
And none of the configurations made sense,
But at least they made space.
