45 diasporische Künstler*innen-Gruppen 100° Diaspora | Performing Exiles

Stage marathon as part of “Performing Exiles”: three days, five stages, 45 performances and more than 150 artists.

How can the resistance of our ancestors be continued? What legacy do we leave behind? How can war be followed by reconciliation? What happens when we consciously give space to inner emptiness? Can looking at a spider change our everyday lives? Can mayflies change our attitude towards death? What happens when earthlings and aliens swap roles? How can borders be overcome? Where do governments hide their secrets? What are the strategies of climate activists in Iran? What if sex work was treated like an ordinary office job? How can coffee grounds reading be understood as a social technology?

These and other questions will be asked by 45 diasporic artists (groups) on five stages over three days at the Haus der Berliner Festspiele during the stage and performance marathon “100° Diaspora”. The programme is not curated in terms of content: Artists were able to apply and were invited on a first come, first served basis and according to the possibility of realisation. With the “100° Diaspora” format, Performing Exiles aims to present the widest possible range of Berlin’s diasporic artistic scene and to offer artists a format that enables comprehensive participation. The open call for participation generated an enormous response in a short space of time – a sign of how large and diverse this scene is in Berlin and how urgently performance opportunities are needed in the city. “100° Diaspora” is an attempt to make the limits and possibilities of our lived political and social reality aesthetically tangible. The challenging programme with more than 150 participating artists requires participants, visitors and organisers alike to be willing to engage with each other, with contradictions and with the unforeseen – both in terms of content and aesthetics.

The “100° Diaspora” programme at Haus der Berliner Festspiele can be discovered individually with a day ticket. The performances extend from the side stage via the main stage to the back stage, the foyer and the garden. The “Club de Baile”, the festival centre in the box office hall, also offers space for encounters and exchange. Each day ends with a midnight talk for collective reflection: Here, dramaturges and programme makers are invited to talk about what they have seen and put it into context.

The Goethe-Institut in Exile supports the supporting programme of “100° Diaspora” as a cooperation partner. In addition to the joint planning and realisation of the Midnight Talks, the Goethe-Institut in Exile offers the workshop “Funding the Future: Navigating Cultural Funding in Germany and Europe”. Here, artists and participants of “100° Diaspora” will receive insights and ‘hands-on’ advice on transnational cultural funding in Germany and Europe. The workshop will be led by Sebastian Hoffmann (International Theatre Institute) and Alessia Caratelli (Culture Moves Europe, Goethe-Institut).
