4RUDE 20TH ANNIVERSARY SERIES – Programme VI

Empty Stare by 4RUDE premiered in July 2023 at Berlin’s Theater im Delphi and is now revived.

Inspired by Hans Bellmer’s puppet sculptures, Empty Stare listens for the voices of the voiceless—not only humans, but plants, animals, and seemingly inert matter such as stone, wood, and dolls. What appears silent or lifeless quietly returns our gaze, reflecting an unnamed part of ourselves.

Through Butoh, the dancers offer their bodies as sites of listening. Movement becomes resonance rather than explanation, loosening fixed perceptions and dissolving boundaries between self and other. The work does not impose meaning; instead, it opens a field of sensation, inviting each viewer back into a deeper, more truthful reality.
