Richard Wagner is a drag queen, and Shlomi Moto Wagner’s great-grandfather was her drag mother. Together they share not only family roots, but also a drag heritage in the Jewish House of Mazeltov. This pseudo-documentary music theatre performance combines classical Wagner motifs with electronic beats, lip-sync, video projections and lots of pink satin.
This contemporary opera performance unearths the biographies that have been erased, censored or rewritten – on both sides of the Wagner family tree. It draws on the forgotten legacies of queer survival, Jewish memory and the seductive power of myth – and evolves into a dazzling spectacle of drag, deconstruction and fantasy.
So, Mazeltov Queen Richard Wagner – let’s go!
