Symbolic Movement Choir SLEEPWALKING BALLAD

Sleepwalking Ballad is a ballet for 4 dancers based on the poem Romance Sonámbulo by Federico García Lorca, set to an original score by Shy Ange and Ben Bondy. Through the lense of his work, the physical vocabulary of modern dance, which itself traces a zeitgeist of political violence, is used to connect the dancers’ inner landscapes to a current, increasingly urgent global condition of domination and forever-war. Highly detailed movement and austere scenery combine in an epic of love and violence.

About Symbolic Movement Choir:

Symbolic Movement Choir is a modern dance and theater project created by Alishanee Chafe-Hearmon and Fox Conner, aimed at deconstructing and experimenting with modern dance idioms. Inspired by the austerity, sensuality, and virtuosity of 20th century modern dance, the project explores the hauntology of dance, using established forms as containers to hold experiences of grief and fantasy in a hyper-contemporary world. The symbolic language of modernity becomes a means of engaging with a dissonant present which evades contextualization. Together, the duo create live performances that act as Rorschach tests for the audience, reflecting on the past, present, and future.
