The Middle Ages – and techno. They must be mad! Yes, they are mad – but they’re spinning a thread that links the two. The artists of the collective falsch gmbh weave contemporary dance, acoustic cello and electronic music into a unique two-part format: a fast-paced and high-energy stage performance is followed by a participatory dance party.
Drawing on secular music and paintings from the late Middle Ages, a musical aesthetic and dance vocabulary entirely unique to the piece unfolds, which is subsequently developed further into an electronic set. The name ‘betwixt’ says it all: the Old English word for ‘between’ shifts the focus between times, between spaces, between people. The dancers and musicians conjure up a mysterious scene, oscillating between enigmatic rituals and a wild club night, in which power and powerlessness, control and loss of control, sensuality and vulnerability are explored with relish. Ultimately, Kapelle99 transforms into a communal space of sound, image and dance, inviting everyone present to move themselves and one another.
