Bernhard, a bachelor of a certain age, has decided to end his life. As a die-hard pragmatist, he cancels all his insurance policies and cancels his electricity supply before doing so. Bernhard stands on the windowsill, battling his fear of heights. Suddenly, a man appears in the room. He claims he has been hired to kill Bernhard, which the latter does not find particularly amusing. But a gun is, after all, a powerful argument. However, the contract killing ultimately proves difficult to carry out; the killer lacks the necessary resolve. The men begin to talk, philosophising about life and death, boredom and love, until a phone call gives the story a completely new twist.
