KMZ KOLLEKTIV FIVE EXHIBITS

Performance and Material Theater

In spoken German, English, and Spanish, with surtitles • 60 minutes

An evening with Alexander von Humboldt – super scientist, namesake of the Humboldt Forum, second “discoverer” of the Americas!Taking on both the roles of the discovered and the discoverers, three Latinx performers break with Humboldt’s gaze.Through sculptures, plants, stones, and their own biographies, they seek out decolonial counter-narratives:from two materials – potatoes and plaster – they create a shimmering web of unexpected images and rich stories. The biographical material performance “Five Exhibits” is a plea against the Western gaze –that of the Other, of oneself, and the difficulty of separating the two. The Latin American–European team presents decolonial perspectives on the complex entanglement of themes such as museums, heritage, appropriation, restitution, knowledge, and belief in a postcolonial present, while negotiating the possibilities of dialogue and equitable collaboration between the Global South and North.

In their award-winning 2021 production “Coffee with Sugar?”, premiered at Schaubude Berlin, the KMZ Kollektiv already explored colonial continuities

through biographical material. With Five Exhibits, the group from El Salvador, Mexico, Cuba, Spain, and Germany continues this artistic investigation.
