Berlin programme audio description
Audio description at the theatre for visually impaired visitors.
For over 5 years, the Berlin programme audio description has been establishing the topic of audio description in Berlin’s theatre scene.
Theatre is visual – and yet it is more than the eye can see. Audio description gives blind and visually impaired people their own access to the performing arts. Precise, live spoken descriptions bring the stage design, spaces, costumes, facial expressions, gestures and visible actions to life. This creates inner images that enable an independent and equal experience of theatre.
The Berlin Audio Description Programme was initiated in 2019 by Förderband e.V. – Kulturinitiative Berlin as a pilot project and implemented in collaboration with the Berlin Association for the Blind and Visually Impaired in order to sustainably improve cultural participation for blind and visually impaired people in Berlin.
From 2026, the project will be carried out by Kulturinitiative Förderband gGmbH / theaterhaus berlin and will focus on the further development of live audio description as an artistic practice for the next two years. Audio description is not only considered a service here, but also an independent form of stage communication.

chance tanz
Chance Tanz is an inclusive dance project by artists Vanessa and Lorenz Huber (tanzApartment) for disadvantaged children and young people with refugee backgrounds and/or physical disabilities.
In joint projects, participants develop their own ideas and create performances, video dance films or performative walks. Dance improvisation, expressiveness and the joy of movement are at the heart of the project. The projects promote physical, creative and social skills, strengthen self-esteem and personal development, and create an appreciative, respectful atmosphere of togetherness.
