Welcome to Berlin’s audio description programme!

We are delighted to welcome the Berlin’s audio description programme project to the theaterhaus berlin from 2026 onwards and to continue it under the direction of Imke Baumann.

Since 2019, the Berlin’s audio description programme has been providing important impetus for greater cultural participation in the city. Initiated by Förderband e.V. – Kulturinitiative Berlin and developed in collaboration with the Blinden- und Sehbehindertenverein Berlin (Berlin Association for the Blind and Visually Impaired), the project has established itself as an integral part of Berlin’s theatre landscape in recent years. It stands for the consistent opening of stage spaces to blind and visually impaired visitors and for a practice that understands accessibility as a natural part of art.

Audio description makes visible what would otherwise remain hidden: live spoken descriptions of stage sets, costumes, facial expressions, gestures and scenic sequences create inner images that enable an independent and equal theatre experience. At the same time, it also opens up new artistic perspectives on what is happening on stage.

Over the next two years, the focus will be on strengthening live audio description as an artistic practice – not just as a service, but as an independent form of communication and part of contemporary theatre work.

Together with strong partners such as the Berliner Ensemble, the Deutsches Theater Berlin, the Deutsche Oper Berlin, the Schaubühne am Lehniner Platz, the Volksbühne am Rosa-Luxemburg-Platz and many other theatres, the Berlin Audio Description Programme will continue to have a lasting impact on the theatre landscape in the future.

We say: Welcome – and look forward to continuing to work together for a theatre that is there for everyone.
