Annika Schaper BLESSED IS HE WHO HAS NO HOMELAND

Hannah Arendt is writing a fairy tale. Hannah Arendt? A fairy tale? The famous, cigarette-smoking thinker, the astute political theorist?
We were surprised. And moved.
Together with the fairy tale’s main character, a girl tending geese, we embark on a journey of discovery through Hannah Arendt’s world. We meet her at her desk and discover anecdotes from her life there. Poems, letters and quotations flutter through the room.
This production is an exploration of Arendt’s extensive body of work. The focus is on the formative experience of her emigration. Like the girl in the fairy tale, she was always forced to look ahead, to keep moving forward and to keep searching. What does it mean to lose one’s familiar homeland, and how did Arendt cope with it? We seek to gain a better understanding of her thinking and, together with her, to explore what it might mean to be a ‘someone’ in the world.
We showcase the theorist’s poetic side and explore questions that continue to resonate today. Like Hannah Arendt herself, we want to ‘understand’ to some extent.
