For Palestinians, the horror is growing day by day, and not of its own accord, nor because of a natural disaster. It has long since ceased to have anything to do with 7 October – if it ever did. It is the escalation of a wretched, inhuman project that has been going on for a long time.
The creators of “Shared Suffering” are aware of this. The actress Yael Schüler uses her artistic freedom to offer a unique shift in perspective: she alternately embodies the accounts of Palestinian and Israeli victims. In this way, she shares their suffering directly with the audience.
This non-theatre project sees itself as an act of claiming mourning as a collective form of remembrance, without thereby negating the suffering of others. Mourning does not mean silence, and empathy does not mean neutrality. Does it matter whether the victim is Israeli or Palestinian? What is shown here is the existential human condition. And that connects us.
