NASTIA is a German-Ukrainian love story. The production by Kateryna Penkova and Andreas Merz combines autobiographical material with documentary and fictional elements to create a multimedia chamber play. It tells of the hope for a different life, for a future that seems – yet ultimately shatters against language barriers, social constraints and conflicting expectations.
NASTIA is a parable about responsibility, powerlessness and the relationship between Germany and Ukraine, spanning the gap to the war-torn present. Away from major political decisions, NASTIA offers a waning public interest in the war in Ukraine with a poignant human perspective to the waning public interest in the war in Ukraine, thereby opening up a space for empathy, remembrance and the vision of a possible shared future.
